Norfolk Island celebrates Bounty Day 2019

Saturday, 8 June, 2019 to Saturday, 8 June, 2019

Bounty (Anniversary) Day is celebrated annually on the 8th of June and commemorates the arrival of the Pitcairn Islanders to Norfolk Island in 1856. The Pitcairners were the descendants of the infamous English sailors of mutiny on the Bounty fame and their Tahitian companions who, under their leader Fletcher Christian, began a new life on isolated Pitcairn Island. After outgrowing Pitcairn, Queen Victoria gave Norfolk Island to the Pitcairn community which consisted of 8 island family groups. 194 Pitcairners arrived on the Morayshire in 1856.

The celebrations are held in the World Heritage area of Kingston which includes a re-enactment, parade, wreath laying, singing of hymns and a community picnic highlighting traditional food.

The Bounty Day parade will be held on Monday 10th June 2019 in lieu of Saturday 8th June.
